Brandon Markiw wins Alberta Match Play Championship

Alberta Golf (Red Deer) – It’s been quite the summer for Brandon Markiw. In late June the Calgary product got through a field of 240 players to take the Alberta Mid Amateur Championship title at The Edmonton Country Club. This week in Red Deer at the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, Markiw is the last man standing after one round of stroke play and 3 rounds of match play to earn the Alberta Match Play title for 2021, but it certainly wasn’t easy.
Friday morning started in Red Deer with the semi-final matches, Phelan Shaw from The Glencoe Golf and Country Club taking on Nicolas-Guy Landry from Country Hills Golf Club, Landry won the match 2 & 1 to earn a spot in the finals.
The second semi-final was a tough battle between Brandon Markiw from The Glencoe Golf and Country Club & Ryan Hodgins from The Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club. The match went an extra 5 holes with Markiw earning a spot in the final with a win in 23 holes.
Brandon Markiw earned the title with a 1-up victory over Nicolas-Guy Landry in the final to earn his second provincial championship title of the season.
Ethan De Graaf (R) who lost in 2 & 1 in the Quarter-Finals to Phelan Shaw caddied for Bandon Markiw in the finals.
In the consolation match Ryan Hodgins went 5 under par on the front nine and ended up beating Phelan Shaw 2 & 1 to earn 3rd place honours.
