Alex Large plays large to capture 2020 Alberta Mens Mid Am

Alberta Golf (Sundre) – Gorgeous day at Coyote Creek Golf and RV Resort in Sundre for the final round of the Alberta Mens Mid Amateur Championship for the top male players in Alberta over 25 years of age. Ryan Swelin who grew up in Sundre started the day with a 3 shot lead over Ryan O’Donnell of Lethbridge and a 4 shot cushion over Alex Large of Canmore.

On the 9th hole Swelin was 30 seconds away from having a lost ball and shooting a big number but the ball was found and he made an incredible up and down for par to take a one shot lead over Alex Large to the back nine. That’s where Large played large and took over the tournament with 7 consecutive birdies from hole 8 to 14 to take and 4 shot lead that he would never give back.

Alex Large tapped in on 18 for a 6 under 65 for a 4 shot win over Zander Ritson of the Inglewood Golf and Curling Club and 5 shots over Ryan Swelin. The 65 is one shot off the course record set by Kevin Temple in the final round of the Mid Am in 2015 when he took the title.

Large is from New Zealand and was greeted on the 18th green by fellow Kiwi James Varnam who ripped his shirt off and started a Haka dance with the champion ! There could be another celebration very soon for Large as his wife in Canmore is expecting their second child any day now, no doubt being a father for the second time calmed his nerves today but also made him check his phone non stop.
