Rules of Golf Highlights

Alberta is privileged to have nationally certified referees who work closely with our staff to provide a positive and educational competitive experience.  Our volunteer referees provide their time and knowledge on the rules throughout the year and we want to acknowledge them at every opportunity.  If you see a referee at an event, we hope the experience is positive and you create a long last relationship with each of them. Thank you to our referees!

To improve the quality of your experience, our Alberta Golf referees have suggested that even though most players are familiar with the Rules of Golf, in order to speed up play and ensure that all players have an enjoyable and fair experience, reviewing some of the more commonly misunderstood and misused rules would be helpful. There have also been a few changes to the Rules of Golf (made in 2023). The most important changes that a player should know are included.

A lot of the terminology is directly out of the Rules Book. The rest is from the many certified, experienced referees in the province. We are hoping that players will review the “Rules” document and then if you want more detailed information look at the “Interpretations” document. A reminder that any questions you might have about a specific course being played in a tournament will most likely be answered on the Notice to Players that is prepared for many Alberta Golf tournaments. Read it before play begins.
