David Schultz wins Alberta Men’s Senior Championship
Alberta Golf (High River) – Winning a provincial championship is never easy as both David Schultz and Senan Foley will admit after Thursday’s battle at Highwood Golf in High River. Schultz, the 2016 champion, started the day with a 3 shot lead over Foley, the 2021 champion. After the turn Foley had cut the lead to 2 and by the 15th tee it was Foley who had a 2 shot lead and the trophy in his sights. After a couple double bogeys by Foley and a clutch birdie putt by Schultz on the par-4 16th hole, Schultz came to the 18th hole with a 3 shot lead. Anyone who follows Alberta Golf knows what happened 2 years ago on the 18th hole at Highwood Golf during the Alberta Mid-Amateur Championship and there was more drama on the 18th hole today. Foley, down by 3 shots, stuffed his approach to 2 feet and made birdie. David Schultz’s drive ended up right on a downslope and he decided to chip out and get just short of the green in 3 shots, a 2-putt from the fringe was required for bogey and the win but it wasn’t meant to be and we headed for a playoff, a 3 shot swing on 18. On the first playoff hole Foley hit a dart on his approach just past the pin, but Schultz was in trouble over the green. Schultz made an amazing up and down to extend the playoff. On the second playoff hole Foley found the out of bounds on his approach and Schultz made bogey for the win and the title.

Brian Laubman made a huge charge shooting 1-under 70, the only lower round today was a sizzling 4-under 67 by Kevin Temple. Laubman ended up 1 shot out of the playoff, but his solo 3rd place finish put him on the Alberta Interprovincial Team with Schultz and Foley which will represent Alberta at nationals in Ontario this September.
