This year’s seminar is set for February 23rd at the University of Alberta.  The seminar is designed to educate junior golfers and their families on the opportunities and obstacles that are faced when looking into a post secondary education. Alberta Golf is Pleased to Introduce Two New Employees to the Association

Jack Lane has been hired on and will fill the role of our Membership/Tournament Intern and comes to AG from the Mount Royal College Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepeneurship program. He has extensive golf industry work experience having being employed at the Priddis Greens GCC and Glencoe GCC. Jack is also a fine golfer as supported by the fact that he qualified for and played in the 2007 Wolverton Alberta Open!

Rod McLachlan has become the association’s first Membership Rewards and Volunteer Manager. Rod’s main role will be to implement and facilitate the new RCGA Golf Card program; a new initiative to benefit both member clubs and individual members. The program was started in Ontario 3 years ago and has expanded to Western Canada this year. Rod has extensive golf retail experience having worked at McCowan’s Golf and Discount Centre; Nevada Bobs Golf; and Golf Depot in Calgary over the past 10 years.

Alberta Golf staged another successful Scholarship Seminar at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Thank you to the guest speakers for educating our up and coming juniors and their families!  Many thanks goes out to – Tyrone Edwards, Randy Robb, Jill MacDonald, Jessica Luciuk, Todd Halpen, Les Swelin, Ryan Swelin, Rob Miller and Robin Stewart.  The 2009 Scholarship seminar will be held in Calgary at Mount Royal College.

TOP JUNIOR GIRLS IN ALBERTA GEAR UP FOR ELITE TRAINING

Alberta Golf will be conducting the 22nd annual CN Level Five Elite Junior Camp. Alberta’s top junior girls will attend the camp in Calgary Alberta at the Earl Grey and River Spirit Golf Courses. The top six girls in Alberta were selected to attend the camp based on their behavior and deportment in 2007 along with their standings on the Alberta Junior Order of Merit.

Heffernan Wins Third Straight Wolverton Alberta Open Title

The 74th Wolverton Alberta Open concluded today with Wes Heffernan claiming his third consecutive provincial championship title by recording a terrific 4 under score of 68; finishing the tournament at the same score. His victory earned the first place cash prize of $5,000.00. The total purse for the Open was $26,000.00. Please see the press release below for more information.

Wolverton Alberta Open Pro Am Raises $37,000 for Alberta Children's Hospital

The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation was rewarded with a cheque of $37,000.00 at the conclusion of the Pro Am. This brings the three year fundraising effort on behalf of the Alberta Children’s Foundation to $103,000.00. Thank you to all the sponsors for supporting the Wolverton Alberta Open Pro Am.

Irwin Wins Pengrowth Glencoe Invitational

Jordan Irwin of Redwood Meadows GC, won the Pengrowth Glencoe Invitational on Saturday. Irwin will now join Mitch Evanecz and Darren Hupfer on the 2008 Alberta Pacific Coast Amateur Team that will travel to the Royal Colwood Golf Club in August. Irwin finished with a seven-under 209, four strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.

Beaupre Wins Junior Boys Championship

Tyson Beaupre of the Dunes Golf & Winter Club in Grande Prairie shot a final round 69 to capture the Junior Championship and the Juvenile championship with a 4 day total of 7 under. Hot on his heels all day were Sang Gyun Lee, Shane O’Neill and Dylan Cann who all finished tied at 6 under par for the tournament. Please see the press release for more information.

Juanita Rico of the Cottonwood GCC won the 2008 Junior Girls Championship today after shooting a final round 76 to win by two strokes over Breanne Neufeld of the Land-O-Lakes GC. Forshner wins Second Consecutive Sun Life Ladies Amateur

Nicole Forshner of the Banff Springs GC, shot an even par 71 today to win the Sun Life Alberta Ladies Amateur Championship. Four time champion Jessica Luciuk of Barrhead GC finished seven strokes back while Bari Erais of Henderson Lake GC finished 10 strokes back. Mary Beth McKenna of Fort McMurray GC defeated Kim Carrington of Willow Park GC in a two hole playoff for the final spot on the Alberta Ladies Interprovincial Team.

Stiles Fires a Final Round 67 to Clinch the Sun Life Financial Men's Amateur Championship

Scott Stiles of Bearspaw continued his near flawless golf with a final round 67 to win by 1 stroke over Jordan Irwin of Redwood Meadows who shot a 1 under 69 to finish second. Tom McKinlay Jr. of Lacombe also scored 69 to take third place to finish 1 ahead of third round leader Mitch Evanecz from Red Deer who had a disappointing 78 for fourth place. These 4 will now represent Alberta on the Willingdon Cup team; along with those finishing in the top 20 will now be eligible to play in the Canadian Amateur Championship being held at Paradise Canyon in Lethbridge August 10 – 14.

Joining Senan Foley, Frank Van Dornick and Dave Schultz on the Mid-Am team is Tom McKinlay Jr. They will represent Alberta at the RCGA Canadian Mid Amateur Championship at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach B.C. Aug 18 -22.

Southern California Wins the GJAC at Willow Park GC

Team British Columbia, lead by Christine Wong, clinched second place in the Girls Junior America’s Cup which wrapped up Thursday at the Willow Park Golf and Country Club. Dowdell Wins Johnson Insurance Senior Mens Championship

The final round of the Johnson Insurance Senior Men’s Championship finished today.  The Pheasantback Golf Club presented a punishing test for the competitors and swallowed a record number of Pro v’s! Course management was key to Al Dowdell’s success in the 54 hole event as he fought off Frank VanDornick’s charge today.  Al Dowdell of the Pinebrook Golf & Country Club managed a 1 under 70 to clinch the Johnson Insurance Alberta Men’s Senior Championship.

Irwin Wins the Pacific Coast Amateur

Jordan Irwin of Calgary shot an even round 70 to win the Pacific Coast Amateur at the Royal Colwood GC. This marks the second straight year that an Albertan has won this event. Alberta Wins Willingdon Cup Fourth Consecutive Year

The Alberta Golf team overcame a 5 shot deficit after the first round to win the Willingdon Cup by three strokes over Manitoba and British Columbia. Alberta has now won the event the last four years and 7 times in the last ten years. The Final round of the Frank Lindsay Alberta Bantam Championship saw some great scores from the eventual champions. Jennifer Ha of the Glencoe won the Bantam Girls title by 15 shots after an even par 71 today. Wilson Bateman of the Blackhawk Golf Club captured the Bantam Boys Championship with a 4 under par 67 and two day total of 137 to win by 8 strokes. A full press release is available below.

First round leader Dean Meppem of Nanton shot a final round 77 to clinch the Alberta Mid Handicap Championship by 4 strokes of George Mader of Priddis Greens.The inaugural Alberta Public Players Club Mid Handicap Champion is James Humbke who shot 79 and 83 over the 2 rounds to win by 3 strokes over his nearest competitor. This year over 40 PPC members played in the Mid Handicap Championship, almost making up half of the 90 player field. A full press release is available below.

Albertans Find Success on Canadian Tour

Alberta Golfers have found success on the Canadian Tour in 2008. Five Albertans have finished in the top 25 on the Order of Merit. Wes Heffernan led the group finishing second on the OOM and gains an exemption into the second stage of the PGA Tour Q-School. Dustin Risdon, Barrett Jarosch, Dale Vallely, and Kris Wasylowich round out the five Albertans. More information can be found on the Canadian Tour Website.

Canada Games Training Continues

The 2009 Canada Games, set for August 22nd in Charlottetown PEI are quickly approaching. Congratulations to all of the CG training prospects over the past year for their outstanding play and commitment to the program.
The program began with a large number of prospects, 24 boys and 14 girls that have been involved in a number of activities including golf tournaments, camps, sport science discussions and fitness testing. Please see the full press release below.

Alford Awarded Sportsmanship Award

Calgary resident, Jocelyn Alford, 18, has earned the honourable distinction for an award that recognizes sportsmanship, dedication, and commitment in the game of golf.  The award is named after Helena Harbridge, an outstanding junior golfer who passed away in 2006 during her freshman year at West Georgia University. During the same evening, Mrs. Lola Rosza of the Calgary Golf and Country Club and Mr. Tony Krivoblocki of the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club will be awarded a Distinguished Service Award for their meritorious volunteer contribution to the game.
